Detail of hospital, Liverpool Road, Chester
The centrepiece of the Countess of Chester Hospital, built as the County Lunatic Asylum in 1827-29 by William Cole (jr). The pediment contains a "surprisingly jolly representation" of the Cheshire arms. Grade II listed. Modern hospital additions lie to the south, although this building still houses a variety of medical services.

Water Tower, Countess of Chester Hospital
The Countess of Chester Hospital opened in May 1984 and was built on a site previously occupied by the Cheshire County Lunatic Asylum. A distinctive feature of the original hospital was the historic brick water tower which is all that remains of the 1829 buildings on the site. Two years ago, planning permission was granted for a residential development with up to 90 new homes, the scheme is designed around the tower.
