'Princess Elizabeth' & railtour arrive at Chester, 1977
LMS Princess Royal Class 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' is at the head of 'The Cathedrals Express', a railtour that had started from Euston. 6201 took over the train at Hereford. The return journey to Hereford was headed by GWR 6000 'King George V' which had arrived in Chester earlier at the head of a railtour from Bridgnorth. Chester No4 signal box was a very large box of LNWR design which controlled Chester North Junction where the line to Birkenhead branched off from those to Holyhead and Shrewsbury. It was provided with a 176-lever LNWR tappet interlocking frame. Built in 1904 it closed in 1984 when it was superseded by Chester Power Box and colourlight signalling.
