Chester Station
No station in Britain has a finer frontage than Chester - this photograph only shows about half of it. Until a few years ago, this station had the suffix (General) to distinguish it from the ex-Cheshire Lines Committee's station at Chester (Northgate), now closed.

Contrasts in locomotives at Chester General
View eastward from Platform 4 at the west end of the Station, on a Summer Saturday. The Type 4 Diesel (No. D373) is working the 11.55 Manchester Exchange to Holyhead - and while it waited there for 25 minutes three Up and one Down expresses passed or called, while LMS 4F 0-6-0 No. 44389 and Great Western 4-6-0 No. 4962 'Ragley Hall' were passing light engine, the 'Hall' to work the 13.50 semi-fast to Shrewsbury. Those were the days!

View eastward along Platform 5, the 12.40 Class B local train is headed by BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 No. 78056 (built 8/56, withdrawn hardly 10 years later in 7/66).

Chester General Station, with Up holiday express
View NW, towards North Wales and Birkenhead (also the ex-GWR main line to Shrewsbury). The Summer Saturday 13.20 Llandudno to Derby is passing on the Through lines - one of a constant flow of Holiday expresses on a Summer Saturday 50+ years ago. The locomotive is a Stanier 5P4F 2-6-0, No. 42957.
