Depiction of Gelligaer Roman Fort
On the right here https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6392389 at the edge of the field on which the Roman fort once stood. The Museum.Wales website records that the Roman fort at Gelligaer was part of a military network across Wales which prevented any native rebellion. Gelligaer's nearest neighbours were forts at present-day Pen-y-Darren to the north and Caerphilly to the south. Recent research indicates that the garrison was probably withdrawn at the time of the Emperor Hadrian (117-138) after the Silures had been pacified.
