Coastwatch Centre, Barry Island
Located alongside Clements Colley Walk between Whitmore Bay and Jackson's Bay, overlooking Nell's Point and the Bristol Channel, this was the first NCI station established on the Welsh coast, built on the site of a derelict coastguard station. NCI (National Coastwatch Institution) is a voluntary organisation set up in 1994 to restore a visual watch along UK shores after many small coastguard stations closed. The opening ceremony of this site was on February 16th 2007.
The station has views of the Somerset coastline from Weston-super-Mare in the east, the islands of Flat Holme and Steep Holme, to Foreland Point on the Devon coast in the west. All commercial traffic to and from Barry, Cardiff, Newport, and ports on the Bristol side pass Nell's Point. Pilots for commercial traffic using the upper Bristol Channel are based at Barry Harbour.
