I took this photo along with many others to demonstrate the change in Gilfach Goch since the collieries closed down 50 yr. ago this year in 1959. I set the new ones up against old ones on a DVD slideshow.

How Green was my Valley
The winter sun struggles to bring brightness to the old valleys mining village of Gilfach Goch. This is a dead-end valley with the road from Evanstown on the right running straight towards the old colliery workings before turning sharply back towards Gilfach Goch. This road follows the old tramway which used to service the Britannic Merthyr colliery. Mynydd Maendy wind farm is on the horizon. It was in this village that the author Richard Llewellyn wrote the novel ‘How Green was my Valley’, basing it on Gilfach Goch. Not so green in this light!
