This shows the main coke oven battery. The bunker is on the left and feeds into a larry car (visible to the left of the pipe bridge over the centre of the barry) and this feeds the ovens from above. They are emptied horizontally by a pushing machine on the same side as the photographer with the coke being expelled on the far side. The ovens are externally fired and the chimney serves the battery. The three steel chimneys to the right are on the site boiler house.

The bunker for feeding the battery is on the right. To the left is the plant for cleaning the coke oven gas and byproduct recovery. Somewhere in the vicinity will be the exhauster plant with steam turbines driving exhausters to pull the gas off the battery. There is also a booster house with reciprocating compressors pumping to the gas holders. I've seen this on an urban exploration site.

Seen from the entrance to Coedcae-Ddu Farm (spelling as on the sign nailed to a tree). I am amazed that this former coke works is still standing. There is a man and a dog security operation but the urban explorers are regular visitors. I stayed strictly right side but that probably had something to do with me wearing a suit having come straight from interviewing.

The two wooden cooling towers in the centre are listed. The rest of the site isn't. I leave you to draw your own conclusions as to how sensible that is and what may ultimately happen to them. I suppose they could be left when the rest is demolished but without context they would be pretty meaningless. The Germans have preserved an entire cokeworks (sort of - much of it is pretty much like Cwm Coke).

A good view of this derelict works. The coal handling plant is on the left with conveyors to the big bunker on top of the battery - this is to the immediate right of the chimney. Coke was ejected to the left of the battery and quenched under the white cylindrical concrete quench tower (I've never seen one like that!). One of the coke car locomotives (painted blue) is lying on its side in front of the quench tower. To the immediate right of the big bunker is the area where the pushing machines operated. The coke oven gas pipes can also be seen leaving the battery. On the right is the gas scrubbing and byproduct recovery area. There is also one of two wooden cooling towers that are actually listed buildings.

Seen from near the entrance to the site. There is a public footpath runs along between the main works and the car park and office block.
