Steam winch, Tymawr Colliery, Hetty shaft
A horizontal duplex geared winch built by Uskside Company, Newport and still workable on compressed air when photographed. The headgear and engine house of the Hetty Shaft are in the background. The winding engine in the house has now been preserved but the winch has suffered considerable degradation in the intervening 35 years.

Steam winding engine, Hetty Shaft
Built 1875 by Barker & Cope of Kidsgrove, Staffordshire. Rebuilt by Worsley Mesnes Ironworks with their piston expansion valves. Can be operated on compressed air, which is how it was worked for the last few years in service until stopped in 1983.

Hetty Shaft at Hetty Pit / Great Western Mine or Colliery was 398 yards deep (now filled) and is 16 feet in diameter. This is the view of the main shaft from the 1950s fan house area taken during the open day at the site.
