Whitchurch Hospital, Cardiff
Combined water tower and chimney with power house complex at the bottom. There were two Belliss and Morcom steam engine generator sets here but on this visit we found the dismantled in the yard. Sad!

Power house, Whitchurch Hospital
A pair of Belliss & Morcom inverted vertical compound enclosed steam engines driving modern alternators. The engines were of 1906 vintage and were in regular use until 1985 (just missed them). They were removed in 1987, allegedly for re-use (quite a few were exported). These were of 220 bhp at 428 rpm (a common speed for 50 hz alternators driven by steam engines).

Whitchurch Hospital
Opened in 1908 and named the Cardiff City Mental Hospital, it was renamed Whitchurch Hospital in 1948 and on being renamed Whitchurch Hospital in 1974 became the centre for psychiatric services of South Glamorgan Health Authority. The hospital also served as the Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital from 1915 to 1919 and as the Cardiff Royal Infirmary War Emergency Hospital from 1940 to 1945.
