Glamorganshire Canal - Whitchurch, Cardiff
Started in 1790 the canal linked the Ironworks of Merthyr, at a height of 175 metres, to the sea at Cardiff, a distance of 41 Kms. or 25.5 miles. The canal had 52 locks to facilitate the drop in levels. This section closed in 1943 although that to the north of this section had been in disrepair for many years previously.

Canal overflow
The canal bank has been breached and the water is spilling over into the Melingruffydd feeder. Sandbags are proving to be barely adequate stepping stones.

Melingriffiths Feeder - Whitchurch
The feeder from the nearby River Taff feeder at Radyr weir was used to provide water for the Melingriffiths Tin plate works.

Sunny Bank Weir Bridge, Glamorganshire Canal, Cardiff
The canal is nearer the camera, with the Mellingriffith Feeder on the other side of the tow path. The bridge - dating from 1851 - had the side near the canal curved to allow the ropes of horse-drawn barges to pass over it.
