The Owain Glyndwr, Cardiff
The pub was formerly called the Tennis Court Hotel. An article in the Western Mail, 26 July 1913, announcing the imminent opening of a first floor grill and luncheon room in the hotel, stated: "There is, perhaps, no better known house in Cardiff than Nell’s Tennis Court Hotel, under the shadow of the famous old church of St John, a position it has occupied for 70 years; but recently considerable structural alterations have been effected, a special feature being the provision of excellent accommodation for luncheons, teas, &c." W.W.Nell Ltd were the owners of the hotel and of the Eagle Brewery formerly behind it. It seems a pity that a name with such a long history was jettisoned some years ago in favour of one which seems redolent of an ersatz, "theme-park" Welshness.
