Castle Street, Cardiff, Wales
Public broadcasting - through what later became the BBC - began in this building (19, Castle Street) on 13 February 1923 using a transmitter at the Castle Avenue Electricity works. However, it took until 1 March 1923 for the station to broadcast a talk in Welsh. The opening of this radio station was followed by the creation of a relay station in Swansea that began its output on 12 December 1924. Initially everything broadcast from Cardiff was produced by that station. However, by 1924 approximately 75% of Cardiff's output, and an even larger proportion of Swansea’s, came from London. At the end of the decade about 70% of the population of Wales were able to receive broadcasts from the BBC, which renamed itself the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1927.
