Statue of John Batchelor, Cardiff
John Batchelor was born in Newport in 1820. He became a prominent figure in Cardiff where he was a timber merchant and later a slate merchant. He was an active Liberal politician, serving as a Liberal councillor and as Mayor of Cardiff. His campaigns against slavery are remembered in the words THE FRIEND of FREEDOM inscribed on the plinth of the statue that was unveiled here in The Hayes in 1886, three years after his death in 1883. Behind the statue is a Habitat store.
