"The Old Vicarage", Steeple Bumpstead, Essex
I believe this house to be where Nurse Edith Cavell was employed as a governess prior to 1909. The confusion comes from the fact that just opposite is another house called simply "The Vicarage"
Edith Louisa Cavell was among six nurses from the London Hospital in Whitchapel, taken to assist in the Maidstone typhoid outbreak of 1897. With their expert care, only 132 out of 1700 infected patients died. For this she received the Maidstone medal. But even so, she was criticised by her superiors for bad punctuality in spite of the long arduous hours for poor pay (7am to 9pm for £10 per year).
At the outbreak of the first world war she went to Belgium, insisting that she was needed there most. She nursed anyone who was wounded, allies and enemy alike. Eventually she was arrested by the Germans, tried, and sentenced to death for harbouring allies. On the 12th of October 1915 she was shot by a firing squad.
