Our Lady & St Etheldreda's Church
The most prominent church in Newmarket, on a prime town centre site between the bus station and Waitrose, and grander than any of its Anglican neighbours. Our Lady Immaculate and St Etheldreda was designed in 1966 by [John Baptist] Sebastian Comper, son of the great Sir Ninian. It was not yet standing when Pevsner recorded the town's churches in 1961 (acidly commenting that they "can indeed be considered last") nor did Enid Radcliffe deign to mention it in her revision of 1974. Architecturally a basilica in the popular Tuscan revival style of its generation, the church is entered by a western narthex beneath the rose window. The unusual effect along the roofline is a reflection of the sky and clouds. Our Lady & St Etheldreda's Church
The church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Etheldreda was designed by John Baptist Sebastian Comper in 1966 in the Tuscan revival style of the day. The baptistery with its octagonal roof projects from the north side of the church. The material of the roof ridge reflects the blue of the sky.
