New River at Exning
New River rises up from the Seven Springs in Newmarket and flows through Exning, Landwade, Fordham, Burwell and Wicken, where it connects to Monk's Lode. Here it is quite narrow and shallow, with houses backing onto one side and a paddock on the other.

Exning St Martin?s church
Exning church stands slightly aloof from the street and is partially screened by trees. A curious little clock-bell turret sits atop the 14th century tower, and a broken stone coffin lies at its base. The church had been over-restored. Thankfully, the Victorians merely covered the earlier work and it remained hidden, revealed by more enlightened modern restoration. The age of the church can be further established by the early 14th century simple arched piscina with a double drain. The pulpit is 18th century and still has its original back and sounding board. In what is now St Wendreda’s chapel, an aumbry, ornamental piscina and double heart-shrine were uncovered during restoration in 1972. There is much of interest here, some of it unique and I strongly recommend a visit to what is Suffolk’s most westerly church.

St Martin's Church, Exning
St Martin's, Exning dates from the late 12th Century. The church is a Grade I listed building, situated in the centre of the village of Exning in a conservation area, with a large churchyard. The approach to the church from the west end through the churchyard is up a steep slope, reflecting the elevation of the church above the rest of the village. Until recently the church was clearly visible from the A14 Newmarket bypass, but this view has now been somewhat restricted by the erection of sound-reducing barriers on the road.
