Exning St Agnes? church
A Victorian church built in 1886 and commissioned by the Duchess of Montrose in memory of her husband, William Stuart Stirling Crawford. It was built by R.H. Carpenter from red brick and stone and the theme is carried into the interior. The tower cum turret is unusual and is pleasantly light in appearance. Just above the louvres in the stone belfry stage are graceful arches, carved in fine detail. The slender spire-let is delicately crocketted. I like it because it is not trying to look like something it is not. The interior is lavish with mosaic and a majolica-tiled dado. The reredos is a beautifully carved depiction by Boehm of St Agnes and her lamb being borne up to heaven by angels from the Colosseum, where she was martyred. Above is a blind arcade containing six saints within the arches. The whole of the east wall is tiled in mosaic and is unique in Suffolk.

Tomb of W.S.S. Crawford
The epitaph speaks for itself: "With deepest love and in memory of William Stuart Stirling Crawford of Milton, Lanarkshire who fell asleep at Cannes, February 22 AS 1883. He now rests beneath the cross and near the church of St Agnes, erected by his wife as a memorial of him."
