Old Milestone by the A1303, Newmarket Road, Cambridge
Carved stone post by the A1303, in parish of Cambridge (Cambridge District), Newmarket Road, by No. 560, opposite Ditton Fields, on the verge, on South side of road. Great St Mary stone, erected by the Paper Mills turnpike trust in the 19th century. Inscription once read:- II (To Cambridge) Cambridgeshire HER. Ditton Fields on a cloudy morning
This is part of a large council-built estate north of Newmarket Road (ahead). On the right is a cast-iron sewage vent pipe, one of many in Cambridge which carry the maker's plate of Ham, Baker & Co Ltd of Westminster.
