Part of the Awards Case at the British Antarctic Survey
Next to the iconic BAFTA award is at the centre a sculpture presented to the British Antarctic Survey in The Vatican in 1997. I had the pleasure of giving a speech at the ceremony which was recorded for Vatican Radio. The award is called the Saint Francis - Canticle of all Seasons. It was presented for the discovery by BAS of The Hole in the Ozone Layer. In exchange I presented the Pope a leather-bound book in which I had produced a commentary on relevant Antarctic environmental science for the couplets of the Canticle. For the couplets that make up the canticle (which many will recognise) go to https://www.xavier.edu/jesuitresource/online-resources/documents/canticleofthecreatures-whitebackground.pdf . There are many translations of the words and the poem has also been called The Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon, or The Canticle of The Creatures, The Canticle of The Sun, or the Canticle of Creation.
