A Trinity Hall 'milestone'
Historically, Trinity Hall College set up a number of milestones near Cambridge. In 2006, to mark the opening of some new buildings on their Wychfield site, they added a new one on Storey's Way. With a pleasing academic twist, this one is metric! The main part of the College in central Cambridge is 2006 metres to the south-east, but the main entrance to Wychfield is just 50 metres away WNW. I can't resist adding a little anecdote. When my own College (Sidney Sussex) reached its 400th anniversary in 1996, a close friend and I donated a piece to recognise the occasion. Rather against his better judgment (he is a linguist), I insisted that the date was shown as MIIIIM. Not, of course, correct, but rather more elegant than MDCCCCLXXXXIX, or whatever the correct Roman form is for 1996. (Actually, I suspect that they rarely used such large numbers.)
