St Matthew's Church
Designed by Richard Reynolds Rowe and completed in 1866, one of the new parish churches dedicated to the four Evangelists and built just outside the central ring road in the later 19th century to serve the expanding residential areas, St Matthews was situated "in a poor quarter" as noted by Pevsner. "Brick with lancets, humble but of unusual plan: Greek cross with octagonal centre ... Spectacular interior, the skylit octagon being faced with vigorous panelling - a kind of pitch-pine version of Ely." Rowe had assisted George Gilbert Scott in his restoration of the Octagon at Ely Cathedral in the previous decade. The eastern arm of the cruciform plan ends in an apse, and the building is constructed in gault brick with redbrick dressings. The Holy Table is said to have come from Trinity College Chapel and to date from the 17th century. Arthur Mee in 1939 described the church as "more curious than interesting".
