Cambridge Co-operative Society, James Street
These premises have belonged to the local Co-op for at least 100 years and probably ever since they were built. They have, however, changed from being a bakery to housing a funeral service.

James Street in 1972
James Street led from the junction of Newmarket Road and Maids' Causeway to Fitzroy Street in the Kite, an area of small streets later developed into the Grafton Centre. The nearest three houses in this photograph survive; no 4 upwards were demolished and replaced by new council housing. Note the bricked-up property and the vintage vehicles parked on the small front "gardens" and encroaching on the pavement! For a view 40 years on see Image

Co-op Funeral Parlour
The front of the building at 33-34 James Street remains much as Colin Rosenstiel photographed it 40 years earlier Image, but a wider view shows the new Co-op logo to the right of the fascia and some traffic-calming measures in this short street between the Grafton Centre and the Newmarket Road.
