Western end of the Hadrian's Wall National Trail

Sea defences, Bowness on Solway
Bowness is built on a small hill and at this point the Solway at high tides is cutting away the small cliff. However these defences themselves are beginning to collapse. Will they be repaired or will Bowness be eventually abandoned to a rising sea ?

Hadrian's Wall Pavilion, Bowness on Solway
This unusual shelter on the Solway shore marks the start (or end) of Hadrian's Wall Path - a national trail. It is 84 miles from here to Wallsend and the plaque wishes walkers: 'good luck go with you'.

'Roman' mosaic, Bowness on Solway
This mosaic in the Roman style is located in the shelter that marks the start of the Hadrian's Wall path. It is a collage of drawings by children from Bowness Primary School depicting birds of the Solway. The mosaic was put together by the artist Gilly Watson.
