World War I memorial at the Knowe United Reformed Church, Bewcastle
The wider location of the memorial is shown in this photo Image . It is evident that the memorial and plinth have been renovated very recently.
The memorial is inscribed 'In honour of the men of this parish who fell in the Great War 1914-18'. Twenty men are named - see Image .
Prior to the formation of the United Reformed Church in 1972 (see Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Reformed_Church ), The Knowe was a Presbyterian church. But the war memorial is apparently non-denominational, as the same names are listed on the one at St Cuthbert's (C of E) Parish Church, Bewcastle - for details see Roll of Honour website http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Cumberland/Bewcastle.html .

Names on the war memorial at The Knowe Church
A closer look at Image .
The name of the mason, Beattie & Co, is inscribed on the plinth. This Carlisle firm made over 100 war memorials and plaques, and still has premises in the city today (more information at The Scottish War Memorials Project http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic3361.html&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=beattie&start=15 ).
