The Crown Hotel, Wetheral - September 2016
Dating from circa 1830, The Crown became an inn in 1838. It has seen many alterations and additions down the years, including an extra story added by Harry Redfern in 1930.
The Crown was added to the State Management Scheme in October 1916 and returned to private ownership in 1973. Grade II listed.

Wetheral Railway Station
The station is always unstaffed. Not many trains stop here, only about 6 a day in each direction (towards Newcastle or Carlisle). Some of the trains go beyond Carlisle, towards Stranraer or Whitehaven.

Crown Hotel, Station Road, Wetheral
Grade II Listed hotel. According to the listing, formerly 2 houses that were built around 1800 and it became an inn a couple of years after the station opened in 1838. However, the 67 bed hotel's website tells us that it was originally a farmhouse built in 1700 but confirms it was converted into an inn in 1838 and then a hotel in 1871. It also tells us it has restaurants, fitness club and was recently refurbished (£2.6m 2019 to April 2023 including construction of 10 additional premium bedrooms). In 1916 it was taken over by the Central Control Board and altered to its present form by Harry Redfern for the Carlisle & District State Management Scheme around 1930. It was de-nationalised in 1973 becoming a private hotel. A search of my directories produced; 1847 Jane Lawson; 1858 Henry Simmons; 1873 George Forster (& farmer); 1894-1897 John Hendry (The Crown hotel, near the station, has undergone extensive alterations and is now an excellent residence for visitors.); 1906-1910 Samuel Prudames.
