Mount Pleasant Steps
These steps from the top of Mount Pleasant down to the quayside used to provide access to what was described in the 19th century as "a congregation of most wretched dwellings situated on the side of a hill". At that time there were at least 1800 inhabitants living here in squalid conditions.

Candlestick Chimney, Whitehaven
A remaining ventilation shaft for the former Wellington Pit http://www.visitcumbria.com/wc/wellpit.htm Or it could be an old boiler chimney, last used in 1880s, but since 1969 has had gas vented up the nearby No 3 shaft (sunk 1905) piped through the old boiler flue to exit at high level.
