Steam dredger Clearway, Whitehaven
Clearway was a steam powered grab hopper dredger built in 1927 by A Hall & Co of Aberdeen. The engine was an inverted vertical triple expansion engine by the same manufacturer. The cylinders were 10", 16" & 26" x 18". It was of 300 horsepower. The boiler was second-hand in 1972 and claimed to be of French origin. This view is the top of the engine showing the cylinder and valve covers. The oval structure with two long studs sitting on top of the cylinders is the lower manhole from the Scotch boiler. This is proof that the vessel was not in steam and was receiving some maintenance.
