St. Nicholas Church Tower, Whitehaven
St Nicholas' Church was originally built in 1693. In 1701 Mildred Warner Gale, grandmother of American President George Washington, was buried in the churchyard. The church was rebuilt in 1883. It consisted of a nave, chancel, side chapel, clerestory and west tower. On 31st August 1971 fire destroyed much of the nave and sanctuary. Rebuilding was initially considered but instead the church tower was fitted out as an auxiliary chapel and the rest demolished.

This church was rebuilt by Miss Margaret Gibson in her parents' memory, the original church having originated in 1693. In 1971, a fire destroyed all but the southern end, which we see here abutting the main street.

St Nicholas
The Nave was burnt down sometime in the past and for a long time the site was an eyesore until recently when the site was turned into beautiful award winning gardens and the nave area used for various events.
