Former Public toilets, St Nicholas Bridges, Carlisle
These small former public toilets stand at the southern end of St Nicholas Bridges. The visible notice, attached to the locked gate and dating from November 2012 states that the city council has sought permission to demolish the building. This photo shows that though now unmaintained and out of use, the building is still standing in November 2013.

Carlisle, northward view from St Nicholas Bridges over railway complex, 1960
See also Image The train is coming off the Carlisle avoiding-line, heading towards London Road Junction, then to the ex-Midland Settle & Carlisle main line towards Leeds. The two parallel lines come from Carlisle Citadel Station. Seen much more clearly than in the other scene, are the three parallel railway over-bridges, carrying respectively: the ex-LNW lines from Crown Street Goods; the WCML from Carlisle Citadel Station to Lancaster and the South; the ex-Maryport & Carlisle Cumbrian Coast lines. The Citadel Station is also hidden by the smoke in this scene. The locomotive is ex-WD 2-8-0 No. 90386, built as No. 78592 by NB Loco in 12/44, shipped to France the same month, returned to England in 1947 and put to work on the LNER, later (as 90386) on the Scottish Region of BR, surviving until 4/67.
