Leander heading away from Appleby station with a steam special
Ribblehead station was opened by the Midland Railway in 1876 on the Settle & Carlisle line. From 1952 to 1968 the station was called Appleby West, the older Appleby East station being nearby on the Eden Valley Railway. The buildings of Appleby East still survive. It was the only station between Settle and Carlisle to remain open throughout the life of the line up to the present day. This was a Sunday afternoon when 45690 ‘Leander’ was taking a southbound Waverley steam special from York over the Settle & Carlisle Line. It waited here for about ten minutes which was a good opportunity for photographs - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5914514

Appleby Heritage Centre, Steam Locomotive
GWR Hall Class locomotive 4979 Wootton Hall at the Appleby Heritage Centre. Rescued from the Woodham scrapyard, Barry, it remains in poor condition.
