Doorway into St Anne's Hospital, Appleby
The almshouses were "founded and began to be built in the year 1651 .... and endowed ... for the yearly maintenance of a mother, a reader, and twelve sisters for ever", by Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Pembroke. The almshouses are still occupied. The inscription is from my old guidebook to Appleby (price sixpence) which states that the inscription is over the door (perhaps inside?).
