Leander heading away from Appleby station with a steam special
Ribblehead station was opened by the Midland Railway in 1876 on the Settle & Carlisle line. From 1952 to 1968 the station was called Appleby West, the older Appleby East station being nearby on the Eden Valley Railway. The buildings of Appleby East still survive. It was the only station between Settle and Carlisle to remain open throughout the life of the line up to the present day. This was a Sunday afternoon when 45690 ‘Leander’ was taking a southbound Waverley steam special from York over the Settle & Carlisle Line. It waited here for about ten minutes which was a good opportunity for photographs - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5914514

City of Wells at Appleby Station - Appleby, Cumbria
Locomotive 34092 City of Wells at Appleby station, Cumbria in July 1987. Once threatened with closure the Settle – Carlisle line has survived to become a popular rail route through the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The occasion was a railtour – one of a regular programme – orgaanised by Pathfinder Tours of Woodchester, near Stroud in Gloucestershire. Time photo taken not available.

Locomotive 34092 City of Wells at Appleby Station, Cumbria in July 1987. The Settle – Carlisle line route was created by the hard labour of navvies (navigators) and without the sort of advanced equipment that exists today. Add to that their living conditions and it underlines what an achievement it was.
