Appleby Castle (800 years old) is now a private residence and is not open to the public. It is understood that the castle is currently undergoing some renovation work and there appears to be some grumblings, at time of writing, that National Trust/Heritage or some other Historical Society is not pulling its weight in order to get it opened up again to the public.
Back in 1685 Pendragon Castle was partially bastardised in order to repair the castle (masonry, lead and timber were removed and used in the upkeep mainly of Appleby Castle) http://www.matthewpemmott.co.uk/2008/02/pendragon-castle-mallerstang.html
Apparently, due to conflict, the castle was sometimes in England and sometimes in Scotland.
Obviously the Auld Alliance was working well.

Appleby Manor romantic afternoons
Girls will be girls. They'll be talking about it. They'll be practising. There'll be giggling. "OK, Ermintrude, how was that for you? Good, well he'll probably feel just a tad heavier on the day."
"Bulling": Mounting evidence suggests that the cow is the only animal that shows this clearly-defined behaviour. It is thought to have evolved to give visual signals to males or maybe it is to help them cope better when it's for real.
