Appleby Manor Hotel
View from the gardens framed by trees at Appleby Manor over the town of Appleby. Appleby Castle and Caesar's Tower in the distance. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2173255.stm http://www.visitcumbria.com/pen/appbcas.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appleby_Castle Appleby Castle (800 years old) is now a private residence and is not open to the public. It is understood that the castle is currently undergoing some renovation work and there appears to be some grumblings, at time of writing, that National Trust/Heritage or some other Historical Society is not pulling its weight in order to get it opened up again to the public. Back in 1685 Pendragon Castle was partially bastardised in order to repair the castle (masonry, lead and timber were removed and used in the upkeep mainly of Appleby Castle) http://www.matthewpemmott.co.uk/2008/02/pendragon-castle-mallerstang.html Apparently, due to conflict, the castle was sometimes in England and sometimes in Scotland. Obviously the Auld Alliance was working well. "Ne fist a cele feiz a Robert nul contraire Ains alad a Appelbi, la endrait tint sun lire. N'i aveit nule gent: si fud tut desguarni.
