Allonby Beck and Working Men's Reading Room
The red brick building is marked on the second edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map as Working Men's Reading Room. It was funded by Joseph Pease MP, a wealthy Quaker industrialist, and built in 1862 to a design by Thomas Waterhouse, who later designed major buildings including the Natural History Museum in London. It had fallen into disrepair but now seems to have been restored for use as a house.

Former Hotels?
I thought that both of these buildings looked as if at one time they had been hotels, or at least guest houses. In fact the one on the left was the baths where early holiday makers enjoyed the benefits of the waters. I particularly like the tall elegant windows on the first floor.
