Site of "Black Lion" pub, Nelson Street, Maryport - June 2017
The 1866 Maryport Town Plan shows two pubs on this site - the "Cross Keys", which was on King Street and to the left in this view, and the "Black Lion" on Nelson Street, which is the street to the right. The "Cross Keys" did not survive to the State Management era and part could well have been demolished to make way for modern housing. As for the "Black Lion", it was taken into State ownership in November 1918 and no record has yet been found of its fate. It is also possible that only a part of this building formed the pub, with the rest demolished. Both pubs were early 19th Century in date and the property seen here is now a private dwelling.
