Pub Blown Up
The Ancient Mariner on Church Street blew up in the early hours of 17 March 2003. A fire followed the gas explosion and the pub was gone. The church immediately behind and above is St Michaels, gutted by fire in 1994, but now restored. An unfortunate site!

St Michael's Church, Workington
There is evidence of a church on this site from the seventh century. The church occupies a prominent site and would have been originally surrounded by water commanding the mouth of the River Derwent. The church has suffered from two major fires. The first occurred in January 1887, less than 100 years of completion of the Georgian Building of 1772 (which had replaced a smaller church building). The third rebuilding of the church was completed within three years in 1890. During the night of 28th September 1994, as a result of a burglary, fire broke out again at St Michael's. As day broke on the 29th September 1994 (Feast Day of St Michael), the smouldering Parish Church, again lay ruined. However the church was again rebuilt with facilities to benefit the whole community. It was rededicated in a series of services beginning 4th February 2001. http://www.stmichaelsworkington.org.uk/history.htm
