Old Milestone by the B5291, east of Embleton
Metal plate attached to stone post by the B5291, in parish of EMBLETON (ALLERDALE District), entrance to Close Farm, against wall, on North side of road. Cockermouth plate, erected by the Keswick turnpike trust in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- COCKERMOUTH 4 MILES KESWICK 9 MILES Grade II Listed. The East bound A66
I see (using the historic map) that this part of the road was built on top of a disused railway line. I've often driven along this section and wondered if the road was raised to prevent it from flooding, now I know it was built originally for trains.
