Bridge Hotel Buttermere
The Victorian building replaced a former inn first licensed in 1735 and has been extended several times. It was previously the Victoria Hotel and possibly the Queen inn (see directory entries later). Rodney and Rosemary Twitchin bought the hotel in a rundown condition in 1953 and it reportedly became a unique hotel that was run more as a family gathering than a business. The inn now adjoins the rear of the hotel and according to the website in 2013, it was owned and managed by the McGuire family since about 1980 and in 2021 they still hold directorship of Bridge Hotel Ltd that was incorporated in 1986. Looking at directories I find, 1829 the only entry is Jonathan Payle vict. Fish Inn (now Buttermere Court Hotel), An 1889 Francis Frith photo shows the Bridge building as do a number of postcards as the 'Victoria Hotel' and directory entries for the Victoria include, 1847-1858 only a place named ‘Queen’ is listed, 1883-1901 John Nelson Victoria Hotel, 1906 Mrs Haidée Cooper Victoria Hotel and 1910-1914 not listed.
