The Manor House Hotel, Crown Street, Cockermouth
The early 19th century villa was listed in 1951 as "Grecian Villa (County Fire Office)". The 13 room hotel's website tells us it was built in 1847. Thomas Wilson (1791-1857), hat manufacturer, had the villa built as his home. In June 1881 George Mawson placed an advertisement in a local paper and signed himself "The Museum, Grecian Villa, Cockermouth". I don’t know exactly where the museum was accommodated, but his advert read “entrance to Museum opposite to Christ Church”. Exhibits were auctioned off in 1884 and included 60 Chinese figures, a Chinese backscratcher, two polar bear’s paws, an Iguana skin and a stuffed Iguana, drawers of shells, birds’ eggs and cases of stuffed birds. Pevsner mentions "the so-called Grecian Villa" and called it worthy of special notice.
