Former "London Tavern" pub - September 2016
Situated on the corner of Alexander Street and London Road (which was the only way to be certain of the location), this started life as the South End Unionist Club. One of the first licensed premises to be acquired by the State Scheme, it was refurbished and reopened in 1916 as the "London Tavern". Returned to private ownership on 2 April 1973 when sold to Greenall Whitley, it closed in 2008.
For a photograph of the pub just after closure, see:

The London Tavern
Former pub at the corner of Alexander Street (left) and London Road, closed about 2008. It opened in 1916, in premises formerly occupied by the South End Unionist Club (Carlisle Encyclopaedia http://www.carlisleshistory.co.uk/page34.htm ).
Since the photo was taken a new door has replaced one of the front windows, as the ground floor is being converted to retail premises.

Oriental arch, St Nicholas Gate
View of New City Chinese takeaway from St Nicholas Gate Retail Park.
St Nicholas Gate opened in December 1989. The frontage on London Road had a low brick wall, with three of these decorative pedestrian entrances. That all disappeared when the retail park was redeveloped in 2013, and was replaced by a very basic wooden fence.

Lakeland dry cleaners and London Road Stores
The cleaners occupies a building that was originally the Samson public house. Opened in 1891, it replaced an older pub with the same name. The Samson was closed down by the Carlisle State Management Scheme http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A644645 in 1917 (information from Carlisle Breweries and Public Houses 1894-1916 by S.Davidson http://www.p3publications.com/page23.htm ).

The Samson, London Road, Carlisle - March 2017 (1)
Dating from 1891 and named after a steam locomotive on the adjacent Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, this building replaced an earlier pub of the same name built circa 1837 and at one time known as the "Steam Engine". Acquired by the State Management Scheme in August 1916, it was closed in 1917 and has undergone alterations since - particularly on the ground floor (although the first floor is largely unchanged excepting addition of the window nearest the camera). It has had many different uses down the years, including a motor garage, but is now a fast food outlet.
