Penrith gas holder
When this picture was taken most of the old gas works had been demolished - see Image .
The gas holder was redundant due to improvements in the gas supply network, and was dismantled in 2016. The residents of the neighbouring properties here in Ridley Court were probably delighted.

Located in Old London Road.
When this picture was taken most of the gasworks site had been levelled. The one gas holder remaining was demolished in 2016.

The Giant's Thumb
The Giant’s Thumb in St Andrew’s graveyard is a Norse wheel cross dating back to around the year 920 and marking the burial place of someone rich and powerful. During the 19th century, the cross was used as a whipping post for punishing criminals. The base was added in 1887, using carvings copied from the original cross. During the 10th century, Penrith was heavily influenced by Celtic, Anglian and Norse cultures. (Source: churchyard information board)
