Vacant retail units, Penrith New Squares
A view of some of the large number of retail units which were vacant when I visited 16 months after the shopping centre opened. The contrasting dark metal and glass building appears to have been inserted into an existing square, but is however contemporary with the adjacent buildings. The whole development, anchored by the Sainsbury's store behind, was built on brown field land to the south of Penrith town centre and opened in July 2013.
The designers obviously tried to create an impression that the development had been here for a longer period of time with buildings of subtly (and not so subtly) different styles in an effort to make if feel more like a town centre street rather than a homogeneous shopping centre, which in reality it is.

Unoccupied retail unit, Penrith New Squares
This new retail unit facing onto Two Lions Square, part of the Penrith New Squares development, may appear to be two adjoining separate old buildings, but has in fact been newly built, but with a traditional appearance. Over 12 months after the development opened the unit was still unoccupied.
