I don't know how well current courses compare with those of half a century ago.
I recall that I learnt plenty during the January of 1964 - quite hard, but I was (cycling) fit anyway, and had a brilliant time.

Field descending towards mixed woodland
The woods are small in extent and from the camera angle obscure the view to the Ullswater Outward Bound School.
The distant mountain slope has the main ridge of the Far Eastern Fells as described by Alfred Wainwright.

Ullswater from the slopes of Heughscar Hill
In the middle distance, far left, is Place Fell. On the horizon are the hills of the Helvellyn range, the summit being about a third of the way in from the left.
