Tea Room, Orton
Orton is a small market village established in the reign of Edward I, which looks out over Orton Scar and the Howgills. Wainrights 'Coast to Coast' walk passes through the village and it makes an ideal staging post for the long haul to Kirkby Stephen.

Former 'New Village Tea Room', Orton
Sadly, the excellent tea room here closed about four or five years ago and has remained empty and neglected ever since. I used to wonder if the opening of tea rooms at the nearby chocolate factory drew business away. Perhaps it was an early casualty of the economic downturn? We noticed that another establishment serving tea is due to open in Orton in Spring 2013.

Old houses in Orton village centre
These are the backs of houses on Front Street, and one of them bears a datestone "WS 1685". If that's the correct date for the buildings, I'm surprised they are not listed - the parish church, and Petty Hall and its barn, appear to be the only listed buildings in the village.
