A nuclear village with a tight centre, this was probably a Saxon settlement. Picture taken on the way to the chocolate shop.
If breaking a journey on the M6, leave at Shap and get back on again at Tebay, a very slight detour.

Old houses in Orton village centre
These are the backs of houses on Front Street, and one of them bears a datestone "WS 1685". If that's the correct date for the buildings, I'm surprised they are not listed - the parish church, and Petty Hall and its barn, appear to be the only listed buildings in the village.
