Gortmore Park celebrations, Omagh (2)
In connections with the 60 year anniversary of the estate, a marquee has been erected and numerous events, including an interdenominational service, entertainments including fancy dress parade, dance trophy display, five-a-side football, penalty shoot-outs, Irish dancing, face painting, clowns and bouncy castles to be taking places over the two days. I lived here from 1950 in number 30 with my parents and siblings, when the estate was opened, and we stayed there until 1956. A lot of the tenants including my father were employed in Nestles factory. I can't remember a lot about the area, but it was there was very little bother about the place. About the only thing we might have done was to place pennies on the adjacent railway line to flatten them by a passing train. Possibly the only thing that comes to mind was when there was a water shortage, a tanker came and we all had to collect pails of water for drinking. I would have walked to Omagh Model School which was on the site of South West College. We moved to a bungalow at Cannon Hill on the other end of the town which cost a lot of money - I think it may have been about £1300
