MPD railcars, Dhu Varren, Portrush
The MPD (multi-purpose diesel) railcars were old coaching stock converted by the addition of underfloor engines. They were suitable for hauling the limited amount of remaining goods traffic but were mainly used on passenger trains from Belfast York Road. Cars 39,532 and 64 are working the 12.55 Portrush – Coleraine on the approach to Dhu Varren. 532 was an unpowered intermediate. The branch was worked (other than during the North West and summer weekends) on the “one engine in stream” principle hence the tail lamp on the front.

Dhu Varren station (3)
See Image The same train has just left the station and is passing Portrush outer home signal (one of the few somersaults left on NIR) before crossing the high embankment leading to Portrush station. Around 40 years ago the plan was to level the embankment for car parking and make Dhu Varren the terminus. Wiser counsels prevailed.

Railway, Portrush
When this was taken NIR was going through one of its periodic rolling stock crises. This is a return Sunday School special, to Portadown, ascending the bank between Portrush and Dhu Varren. The coaches had been hired from CIE and included vehicles dating from the 1950’s.
