Former Ulster Bank (Connswater Branch), Belfast (1)
The former Connswater branch of the Ulster Bank at 431-437 Newtownards Road. Designed by Blackwood and Jury and opened in 1918 on what had previously been the site of a grocer’s and a delph shop. It was damaged by the Luftwaffe on 15 April 1941 re-opening some six weeks later after repairs. The branch was amalgamated with the Mountpottinger (Albertbridge Road) Image one in 1998 and business transferred to a new building nearby Image on the site of the Ropeworks. After closure it was occupied by a firm of quantity surveyors which recently moved to more modern premises not too far away. The building now has an “agreed” sign after being offered for sale. Image and Image show some reminders of the building’s origins.
