The north-western corner of the walls of Derry as seen from the Bogside
The watchtower, a feature of the view from the early 1970s 'til the end of 2005, was known as the Masonic Observation Post. This is because it was built next to the Masons' Hall, also prominent in the photo. It was a watching and listening facility aimed at the Nationalist Bogside below.

The Bishop's Gate Fort and Observation Post overlooking the Bogside
Already in August 2005 when this photo was taken the post was not manned on a full time basis and later that year parts of it were demolished.

The First Derry National School, Londonderry
This is the former First Derry National School now derelict. Since the early 1970s it has had the military as its neighbours. The white splodges on the watch tower are direct hits by paint bombs catapulted from the Bogside below.
